Assembly Member Bradford Introduces Bill to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse
Assemblymember Steven Bradford introduced a new bill aimed at protecting children from sexual predators.
“In the wake of the Penn State scandal, we need to take a more proactive stance on protecting the safety of our children,” Bradford said. “This bill ensures that any adult who suspects a child is being sexually abused reports that suspicion to the authorities.”
Existing law requires any adult in a supervisory role over children—teachers and teachers’ aides, welfare administrators, clergy, health care professionals, and law enforcement—to report suspected child abuse. AB 1438 applies that requirement to all adults. Failure to report suspected abuse carries a penalty of six months in prison or a $1,000 fine.
“Sexual abuse of children is one of the most heinous crimes,” Bradford added. “We as adults must take responsibility for the safety of those without a voice and this bill ensures we do that.”
Assemblymember Steven C. Bradford represents the 51st Assembly District, comprised of the cities of Gardena, Hawthorne, Lawndale, and Inglewood, and the communities of Athens, Lennox, South Central LA, Westchester, Willowbrook, Playa Vista, and parts of Ladera Heights and West Compton.
